Committee
Goals for the year:
- To
promote the increase of the use of newspapers in classrooms in Tennessee.
- To
provide teachers with ideas of how to incorporate newspapers into their
instruction.
How local
councils can help:
- Promote
the use of newspapers in education in your local area
- Submit
the attached Newspaper in Education Local Council Participation
form to Nancy at NKolodziej@tntech.edu
by March 1, 2009
Benefits of
participation:
- Increase
the use of newspapers in your local schools.
- Instill an
interest in newspapers for children in your area.
- All
councils which participate and submit the Newspaper in Education
Participation form by the due date will receive a certificate of
participation and be recognized at the 2009 Field Leaders Workshop
Some ideas
for local council participation:
- If you
don’t already have a designated NIE committee chairperson, appoint someone
to the position.
- Get
information about NIE programs sponsored by your local newspaper(s). Some
offer discounted or free subscriptions for classroom use. Distribute this
information to teachers in your area.
- Invite
the NIE representative from your local newspaper to speak at your local
council meeting.
- Poll
local teachers for ideas of how they use newspapers in their classrooms.
- Organize
contests for students in your local schools. Students can:
§
create display
ads for local businesses;
§
write letters to
the editor a chosen issue. Selected letters are submitted for potential
publication;
§
create alphabet
books using cut-outs from newspapers;
§
write a news
article about a given topic; or
§
create a
political cartoon.
§
See the
Louisiana Reading Association’s website (http://www.sabine.k12.la.us/lra/200708/nie0708.doc)
for more specific ideas.
- Provide
information to teachers about how they can create their own classroom or
school newspaper.
- Create a
list of resources and ideas of ways to use newspapers in classroom. Post
the list on your council’s website or distribute it to schools. You may
use the resources listed on this document as a starting point.
